| Many have thought that Dr. Deming's Red Bead experiment was powerful
in helping people recognize their simple-mindedness when it comes understanding
variation. An even more powerful demonstration for showing the futility
of adjustments, tampering, random walks, oscillation and a variety of
other concepts is the Funnel Experiment. The experiment was actually developed
by a cohort of Dr. Deming and is applicable to a variety of business situations
such as machine adjustments, automatic compensating routines, calibration,
reacting to accidents, worker training, performance appraisals and much
more. The unit is designed to be used with a gridded chart pad (not included)
and comes with a Funnel, Stand, Ball, and copy of The Deming Dimension
in which Chapter 5 is entirely devoted to explaining the experiment and
the four funnel rules. The funnel also has a set of cross hairs in the
