The Chip Box is an effective teaching aid for demonstrating the use
of samples to make estimates about populations. The device consists
of a box with a series of numbered chips whose numbers are normally
distributed. Sampling from a normal distribution is simulated by randomly
selecting chips and recording the results. The effect of varying sample
sizes on predicting population parameters is dramatized by repeating
a number a experiments as described in Chapter Two of Grant and Leavenworth's
book Statistical Quality Control, which is included. The
Chip Box is made of highly polished ½ inch Lucite measuring 6" x 6"
x 8" and contains 802 numbered chips in four colors. The Chip Box adds
that professional touch to any statistics class.
